Spy -- Movie Review

After a long time, got to watch a comedy movie of my choice. We usually watch whodunits and thrillers so this change was good. Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is a CIA analyst who spends most of her time in a rat-and-bat infested basement, being the ear-piece of the field agent, Bradley Fine (Jude Law) and saves him from danger. She is also secretly in love with him. When Bradley dies in a mission gone wrong, Susan wants to avenge him and opts to get out on the field. How this plan goes all funny and finally right forms the rest of the movie. The movie starts with 007 like opening credits that is impressive as hell.

Melissa McCarthy from Mike and Molly and BridesMaids, is really really funny. I loved her in Mike Molly and she held her own in Bridesmaids but here she is near perfect as Susan Coooper. Jude Law looks dapper and you totally understand that Melissa is in love with him.

Jason Statham was absolutely and amazingly funny. A great find! The Arien has watched so many of his action movies that he found him absolutely amusing in this role. His dialogues drove us crazy :)

The funny moments are not corny and so I really enjoyed it all. The supporting cast was really good. Some of the funniest moments were the verbal slaps between Melissa and Rose Bryne (in a scary hairdo - very reminiscent of 60s and 70s heroines in Indian movies) and of course, Jason Statham's amazing achievements. A really funny moment was when Melissa ate a hand towel assuming it was an appetizer. Very funny and very real :) Also, when she killed an assassin and then tried not to puke over him (eyyooow but we were laughing).

For the folks who follow the bollywood scene, we have Nargis Fakhri in a blink and miss appearance first and a fight to death scene with Melissa. She had on a green jump suit as seen in this pic and the fight was surprisingly funny. You could not see much of her during the fight - it was quite fast and over after a couple of whacks with a pan and a knife to the heart!

We also have a cameo from 50 cents - it did not looked added on for effect and was funny :)

It was a good break and though we caught it in two sittings - it was worth waiting for. Really enjoyed it. Watch it when you can.

Tamil Padam -- Movie Review after the II viewing

Happy Ugadi, you all. It was a holiday for me but the Arien was working.

Because the Arien's place has no cable yet, I decided to check his WD for some movies. MIL was also bored and so it was the funny Tamizh Padam that we opted to watch. I had seen it already but MIL had not and she wanted to see a comedy - having had enough of tear-jerkers and melodrama.
Tamizh Padam is unique because it is the first spoof movie ever made, in Tamil. Considering tamizh sentimentu and emosun - I thought it was quite courageous of the director to shoot a spoof movie and hope for a HIT. It was a sooper (H)IT.

As in a spoof movie, this movie also lifts scenes from
various tamizh movies and adds a twist which makes you burst out in laughter. MIL was able to identify many movies.

The scene where Deva is offered the bill by the doctor and he says "Vendaam" - had me in splits. Another  scene where Shiva dances Bharathanatyam had us rolling in laughter and he completed the dance with - the picture of the ape on the right that was supposed to be the image of the heroine. There were so many scenes that had us laughing crazily - all through the movie.

The hero, Shiva, is a good fit and does his job perfectly. The other character actors do a good job as well.
Some of the movies that were parodied  (not in chronological order) are:

  • Dalapathi
  • Kanthaswamy
  • Boys
  • Kaadhalan
  • Mouna Raagam
  • Dhool

We spent the entire afternoon laughing away. One of the songs seemed absolutely meaningless and we were trying to figure out what the song meant when we realized that the song consisted of all fillers used in Tamizh songs in recent times such as "Randakka, Nakka Mukka, Asili Fisili, Rahatulla, Oh Maha Seeya, etc." Very creative! Absolutely Hilarious! If you have not caught the movie, watch it - if only to take a break from  reality :)

Wild Hogs

It was a Monday and - I was waiting to go home as soon as I walked in - I had some blaah work to do - which was done in record speed. Quickly, before ppl realized I was out of the door - I left :D - Ya.. I do that smtms - provides sm vago (pronounced - Vague + O) excitement and soon I was at home. After a really loong time, instead of reaching home an hour and a half after I leave, I was going to be home in less than half an hour.

Anyways, you know by now, that I totally lowe thrillers, and horror movies but did you know that I also lowe the in-your-face comedies? Well, I do. And, when Wild Hogs was the evening entertainment - I simply could not resist.

There were so many things that you can laugh at and when you look back - maybe even connect to - that I was ROFL :D It did not require you to put on your thinking cap and ponder over the subtle humour - you jes fell over laughing b'cos it was so in your face.

Tim Allen was always a favorite - from the Home Improvement sitcom days. He was not at his funny best, though. John Travolta was, not surprisngly, very good :D If you have seen Grease, Face Off, Broken Arrow, and then Wild Hogs - Well, you can then easily appreciate the actor, in him. Let us not forget Pulp Fiction which was simbly 3 good :D - Yup. Macy and Lawrence provide the needed distrations - sometimes over the top distractions - but one has met smne like them at sm point or the other. The movie recieved quite a few negative reviews but was a top grosser. That proves that critics and their reviews do not make or break the movie - the audience does.

Of course, there was stereotyping - but I liked it all the same. Chk it out when you want a total break from whtever is bugging you - I can totally assure you that you will enjoy the break and totally forget what was bugging you :D
